Would, Could

would, could

- would 와 could는 과거시제 동사와 함께 사용된다.

- would와 could가 will과 can의 과거형이 아니다.

- 과거의 시제에서 미래에 대한 얘기를 할 때 사용된다.

 

I couldn't get up ealry yesterday  / 나 어제 일찍 못 일어 났어. (0)

I could get up early yesterday (x)

couldn't => can의 부정형의 과거형으로 쓰일 수 있음.

could => can의 과거형이 아님

-시제는 동사에 적용된다. would could는 본동사가 아닌 조동사이므로 would와 could는 시제를 포함하고 있지 않다.

 

would

-과거 시제 동사와 같이 써야한다.

-과거 시점에서 바라 볼때 미래를 말하는 경우 사용.

 

I thought it would rain today. 나는 오늘 비가 올줄 알았어.

She promised (that) she wouldn't talk about that again. / 그녀는 다시는 그걸 얘기 하지 않도록 약속 했어.

I told him (that) I would try my best. / 나는 걔한테 최선을 다하겠다고 말했어.

They told me they would give me an answer by this friday. / 그들은 나한테 이번 주 금요일까지 답변을 주겠다고 했어.

 

thought vs knew 뉘앙스 차이

I thought you would know about that. // 알줄 알았어.

I thought you (already) knew about that. // 아는줄 알았어.

 

I thought this would be more expensive. // 난 이게 더 비쌀줄 알았어.

I thought this was more expensive. // 난 이게 더 비싼줄 알았어.

 

could

-would에 ~할수가있다라는 의미가 추가됨

I thought you could help me // 나는 너가 날 도와줄 수 있을줄 알았어.

I didn't think I could get here on time. // 난 여기에 제시간에 못올줄 알았어.

She knew (that) she could pass the test. // 걔는 자기가 시험에 통과할수 있을줄 알았어.

 

thought vs knew 뉘앙스 차이

I thought you could get here on time. // 제 시간에 도착 못할 줄 알았어.(실제 결과와는 반대로 예상)

I knew you could get here on time. // 제 시간에 도착 못할 줄 알았어.(예상 했던 결과)

 

 

 

 

would, could가 단독으로 사용할 때

Could

- ~을 할 수도 있다.

- can의 불확실한 버전.

=> I could marry her, but I think I need to think about it some more.

 

Would 

- ~ 했을 것이다.

- will의 불확실한버전 (보통 if 조건문과 같이 쓰임)

=> if you were my friend, I would help you.
