would, could

- would 와 could는 과거시제 동사와 함께 사용된다.

- would와 could가 will과 can의 과거형이 아니다.

- 과거의 시제에서 미래에 대한 얘기를 할 때 사용된다.

I could get up early yesterday (x)

couldn't => can의 부정형의 과거형으로 쓰일 수 있음.

could => can의 과거형이 아님

-시제는 동사에 적용된다. would could는 본동사가 아닌 조동사이므로 would와 could는 시제를 포함하고 있지 않다.

-과거 시제 동사와 같이 써야한다.

I thought it would rain today. 나는 오늘 비가 올줄 알았어.

thought vs knew 뉘앙스 차이

I thought you would know about that. // 알줄 알았어.

I thought you (already) knew about that. // 아는줄 알았어.

I thought this would be more expensive. // 난 이게 더 비쌀줄 알았어.

I thought this was more expensive. // 난 이게 더 비싼줄 알았어.

could

-would에 ~할수가있다라는 의미가 추가됨

I thought you could help me // 나는 너가 날 도와줄 수 있을줄 알았어.

I didn't think I could get here on time. // 난 여기에 제시간에 못올줄 알았어.

She knew (that) she could pass the test. // 걔는 자기가 시험에 통과할수 있을줄 알았어.

thought vs knew 뉘앙스 차이

I thought you could get here on time. // 제 시간에 도착 못할 줄 알았어.(실제 결과와는 반대로 예상)

I knew you could get here on time. // 제 시간에 도착 못할 줄 알았어.(예상 했던 결과)

would, could가 단독으로 사용할 때

Could

- ~을 할 수도 있다.

- can의 불확실한 버전.

=> I could marry her, but I think I need to think about it some more.

Would 

- ~ 했을 것이다.

- will의 불확실한버전 (보통 if 조건문과 같이 쓰임)

=> if you were my friend, I would help you.

Nuance difference

Evny는 부러워 하단 의미지만 실제로 원어민은 envy you라는 표현을 잘 쓰진 않는다고 한다.

어감이 매우 강하고 부정적인 감정도 있다. 그러니 가볍게 표현할 때는 맞지 않는다.

Jealous는  부러워하거나 질투할 때 쓰는 표현이다. 사전적으로 evny는 부러움, jealous는 질투에 가까운 표현 하지만 미국에서는 I'm jealus란 표현 하나로 질투와 부러워하다를 모두 표현하기도 한다.

말하는 사람의 말투와 상황에 따라 의미가 다르게 해석될 (질투, 시기, 부러움) 수 있다.

Everyone is so envious of her.

모든 사람은 그녀를 부러워 해.

Don't be jealous of me anymore

나를 더 이상 질투 하지마.

I really envious of her new cell phone.

그녀의 새 폰이 너무 부러워.

It sounds like you're jealous.

When I was younger, if something didn't work well, I thought it was because of money.
